September, 2018. I am walking in a grassy field among the Callanish Standing Stones, on the Isle of Lewis off the far northwestern coast of Scotland. It is early morning, barely light. Surrounded by towering, angular silver-gray monoliths, I’m buffeted by a strong offshore wind from the nearby estuary. The morning before, I had paced from stone to stone, introducing myself and leaving a cornmeal offering from the New Mexican land where I live. There are 52 stones in the site—many that loom well over my head and one or two that come only to my waist—so my introductions took almost two hours. When I finished, I had a strong feeling of calm and completeness. I left as other visitors began arriving, with the promise of a more intimate visit the following morning.
Now I’ve returned. I feel the place welcoming me as I respectfully approach the outlying stones. The wind blows ragged clouds along the eastern horizon; they create racing shadows as they alternately shade, then reveal the dawn-lit land and sea. The rising sun gradually shoulders out of the clouds and shimmers in the east. The sea glints and sparks in response. In the growing light, the stones cast long shadows across the grass. Then, before my eyes, the stones and land begin to glow with another, more diffuse light. Suspended between earth and heaven, among the monoliths that have held this mysterious sacred place for millennia, I sense the light within the land, under my feet, all the way to the center of the earth. I feel Earth Light.*
The old ones who built this ancient place—and the ancestors of all of us now alive—knew about this light. They knew about the underworld realms of spiritual forces and telluric beings, which have been intimately associated with humanity for thousands of generations. These powerful energies and beings within the land are still available to us today. When we humbly acknowledge them and ask them to ally with us, they can guide us into an authentic, reciprocal life on Mother Earth.
One of the most important aspects of the Green Christ’s teachings is re-introducing us to this fertile, light-filled realm within the body of the planet. The Green Christ, the Radiant One, is the Son of Earth as well as Heaven. He is the Sun within the Sacred Land and also the Sun in the Sky. He is a divine child of his Mother as well as his Father. His generous, unconditional Light holds, reflects and nourishes the realms of both matter and spirit. He is as much an ally of the Faery beings within the land as he is of the Angels in the heights.
The human-created world that we live in is tragically out of balance in many ways. But one of the most fundamental ways is that human institutions, including mainstream religions, give much more weight and significance to the “above” than to the “below.” Modern humans reflexively honor Heaven as the only source of help, blessing and instruction. Those who are avid gardeners or birdwatchers lovingly attend to and respect the life of the earth’s surface. But hardly anyone, in either the everyday world or the religious arena, pays much attention to the spiritual realm within the land, the body of the planet—much less honors this place as a source of light and wholeness. And yet, it is the sacred, luminous underworld that contains the wisdom and power that we need now more than ever.
The Green Christ, our Master and Brother, can re-initiate us into what we’ve always known—the ancient reality of vibrating with the totality of Heaven, Land, and Underworld. This is the “deep resurrection” he promises. And it brings a resurrection of the land as well as ourselves.
*I will forever appreciate my friend and mentor, the Scottish author and visionary RJ Stewart, for persistently carrying the banner of Earth Light throughout a lifetime of study and practice. In his books Earth Light, Power Within the Land, and The Well of Light, RJ explicates and deepens the ages-old, ancestral knowing that there is sacred, essential light within the earth, light that extends down into the land from the surface world all the way to the starry center of the planet.
